• The Big 3 - 2020 Ford Shelby GT500 vs. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE vs. Dodge Challenger Hellcat Redeye drag race

These are three main muscle cars on the market and they give you a ton of bang for your buck when it comes to horsepower. All three features V8 motors with superchargers on top and all thee send their power to the rear wheels. The similarities end there.

Only the GT500 is equipped with a dual clutch transmission. The Camaro ZL1 and Challenger Hellcat both offer a manual transmission option though in addition to their automatics. The GT500 does not offer a manual.

The Camaro also has the GT500 beat in another area and this one concerns performance. That area is curb weight. The Camaro is the lightest car of this trio. The GT500 and its 4200+ pounds have it weighing what a BMW M5 does. Fortunately, the 4500+ pound Challenger Redeye makes either of them look skinny.

Now, the LT4 motor in the Camaro is underpowered compared to these two beasts. It would need the mighty LT5 V8 from the Corvette ZR1 to get close. The Hellcat Redye with its 2.6 liter twin screw is all about muscle but the GT500 combines higher revs with the efficiency of the TVS2650 roots blower.

So, we get a drag race despite the ZL1 and GT500 being stellar track cars that are not one dimensional.

Traction is an issue but they do two runs and the GT500 comes out on top each time (as it should):

      1. GT500 - 11.3 @ 130.7
      2. Camaro ZL1 - 11.6 @ 122.4
      3. Hellcat Redeye - 11.7 @ 127.0

The Redeye trap speed tells you it is the second fastest car of the trio. A roll race would solve many of the issues with drag racing these cars on a dusty surface.
